Are you planning a pregnancy?
It is an exciting time, but did you know that your diet and lifestyle choices can make a difference to even becoming pregnant.
What do you need to do to prepare for a healthy pregnancy?
It is important to start eating balanced diet and maintain healthy weight to put you on the right track.
Nutritional status of a woman before becoming pregnant determines early development of the baby. Knowing whether your nutritonal status is appropriate is the first step in ensuring your future baby’s health. It’s also very important to control existing health conditions like asthma & particularly type 2 diabetes, before and during pregnancy, to improve the odds of a healthy birth.
What should you do?
- Ask your doctor to check if you’re deficient in any particular nutrient. e.g. Iron, Vitamin A, Folic acid.
- With your doctor’s help, aim to get any existing health conditions under control. If you have type 2 diabetes, aim for optimum blood glucose control before conception, and maintain it throughout pregnancy.
- Important lifestyle changes you should aim for: regular exercise, quit smoking, avoid alcohol, get adequate sleep and reduce stress.
